Nemesis Games - James S.A. Corey (Review)

Nemesis Games - James S.A. Corey

Contains minor spoilers for The Expanse series

By - Karl Vu

Nemesis Games is book 5 in The Expanse series. After the crew of the Rocinante (our main characters throughout the series) return to the Sol system after the events of book 4, the ship has to be docked for maintenance and repairs. The repairs are expected to take a long time, so each member of the crew except for the captain, James Holden, takes a temporary leave to revisit their past and tie up loose ends. Amos Burton, the ship's mechanic, heads to Earth to pay respects to a loved one that passed away and make sure nothing bad happened to them while he was away. Alex Kamal, the ship's pilot, heads to Mars to talk with his ex-wife and try to make things end on a good note. Naomi Nagata, the ship's engineer, goes to Ceres station after she receives a message from her ex-lover that her son is in trouble. Holden stays behind with the Rocinante to investigate colony ships disappearing after entering the ring gates. The crew is brought back together after terrorist attacks of unimaginable scale are carried out against Earth by a splinter insurgent group of the Outer Planets Alliance called the Free Navy.

I didn't expect for the crew to split up in this book, but it was a welcome change to see what individual members of the crew did when they didn't have the others around them. I also didn't expect to see some of the character's past, as I thought that was relegated to the short novellas written about The Expanse's universe. I thought this book was going to dive deeper into all the new worlds the ring gate opened up and how humanity adapted to it, but I don't remember the book mentioning the ring gates much except for trying to figure out why some colony ships are disappearing after completely entering them. I didn't have any major gripes with the book like I did with book 4.

I give this book an 8/10. Not too good, but not bad either. Nothing too notable in my opinon.

Why are villains ugly?

By Rose Benjamin In books and movies, antagonists/villains are often portrayed as hideous beast-like people. Of course, there are exceptions, but writers usually tend to make their villain's appearance match their behavior. This may be to add to the reader/viewer's perception of the antagonist as a villain, having less empathy towards them. Many antagonists are already generally bad people, however, so it shouldn't be necessary to have them look weird. I think it is more likely that villains' appearance is designed to scare a reader or viewer, creating a more immersive experience. Different stories have different reasons and backstories for their villain's appearance. One book published in 2004, The Legend of Holly Claus by Brittney Ryan, tells a story about Santa Claus having a daughter, which then awakens an evil warlock deep below the Earth. This warlock has been sealed inside a prison for a very long time, so it makes sense that he would be ugly. However, the n...

Abaddon's Gate - James S.A. Corey (Review)

Abaddon's Gate - James S.A. Corey Contains spoilers for The Expanse books 1 and 2 By - Karl Vu Abaddon's Gate  is book 3 in James S.A. Corey's The Expanse  series. The Expanse is a sci-fi space opera takes place in the future where humanity has colonized almost every single planet and some asteroids and dwarf planets in the solar system. To explain Abaddon's Gate , I need to give a short summary of what happened in books 1 and 2. In book 1, Leviathan Wakes , our main character Jim Holden and his crew help a rogue detective throw the once populated asteroid Eros, now infected with an alien molecule, into Venus. In book 2, Caliban's War , Holden and his crew, a Martian soldier, and scientist find a group of people on the moon Ganymede using the alien molecule to infect children and change them into super soldiers. Holden and the martian soldier break a bunch of the kids out and nuke Ganymede into oblivion. In Abaddon's Gate , we find out that the alien molecule t...

An Introduction to the SCP Wiki (Karl)

The SCP Wiki is an expansive public creative writing project housed on  scpwiki.com . The SCP Foundation (the Foundation) is a secretive fictional organization inside the SCP universe which contains thousands of people, objects, and places that have anomalous properties. These range from a cardboard box which origami dragons fly out of to a deer god that can turn any matter into a hexagonal column. The anomalies that the Foundation contains, how they are contained, and the stories linked to them are detailed in Special Containment Procedures, which take up the majority of the content on the wiki. Currently, there are six "series" of these procedures, each with a thousand articles.     If you go into a random article on the wiki, you will probably be overwhelmed by acronyms, numbers, and unfamiliar names. There are a few articles that detail what some of these things mean. Useful links are always provided in articles whenever they're mentioned. Object classes...
