An Introduction to the SCP Wiki (Karl)

The SCP Wiki is an expansive public creative writing project housed on scpwiki.com. The SCP Foundation (the Foundation) is a secretive fictional organization inside the SCP universe which contains thousands of people, objects, and places that have anomalous properties. These range from a cardboard box which origami dragons fly out of to a deer god that can turn any matter into a hexagonal column. The anomalies that the Foundation contains, how they are contained, and the stories linked to them are detailed in Special Containment Procedures, which take up the majority of the content on the wiki. Currently, there are six "series" of these procedures, each with a thousand articles.

If you go into a random article on the wiki, you will probably be overwhelmed by acronyms, numbers, and unfamiliar names. There are a few articles that detail what some of these things mean. Useful links are always provided in articles whenever they're mentioned.

Object classes: Words that the Foundation uses describe how hard an anomaly is to contain, which usually represents how dangerous it is. These are displayed at the top of almost all containment procedures.

Security levels: Describes the different levels of personnel in the Foundation. Basically, the higher the level number is, the more authority the people that have it possess.

Secure facilities locations: Describes the different types of facilities and areas used by the Foundation.

MTFs: Groups of specialists that help contain different anomalies that fall into their area of expertise. For example, and MTF called "Mole Rats" would focus on containing anomalies that are underground. Sometimes the names of these MTFs won't really help with figuring out what they do (e.g., Ará Orún, Cythereans, Asimov's Lawbringers), but a link is provided to a page that describes them whenever they're brought up in an article.

GOIs: Other fictional organizations and groups of people in the SCP universe.

The SCP Wiki also has a large number of tales, which are in-universe stories that don't follow the containment procedure format. I'm sure a lot of these are good, but I don't really read them.

There is no comprehensive "canon" in the SCP universe that ties every single anomaly together, but authors can make up their own canons on the wiki, which consist of multiple tales and anomalies that play a part in the canon's story. For example, the Broken Masquerade canon details what would happen if every single organization and group which interacts with anomalies was revealed to the public.

Content warning: The SCP universe can be a pretty dark and disturbing place, so the links below will contain contain content that some may find disturbing.

With all that said, here's a list of some of my favorite articles on the wiki.

  • SCP-093: Red Sea Object - An anomalous red disc. Whenever someone walks into a mirror while holding SCP-093, they are transported to an apocalyptic universe.
  • SCP-1730: What Happened to Site-13? - A site from a parallel universe's Foundation gets teleported to our universe.
  • SCP-1762: Where the Dragons Went - A wholesome tale about a cardboard box which origami dragons fly out of.
  • SCP-2759: As Above, So Below - An anomalous replica of the Ziggurat of Ur. Something strange happens when somebody dies in a specific way in the ziggurat.
  • SCP-2922: Notes From the Under - The Foundation explores Corbenic, the afterlife.
  • SCP-3300: The Rain - Every year, an event happens in the town of Clear Water, Montana that leads to all previous inhabitants to be replaced with completely new ones.
  • SCP-5000: Why? - In a parallel universe, the Foundation's discovery of an anomaly leads them to declare war on the whole of humanity.
  • Substation 9 - A user on a forum of ordinary people trying to find the truth of the anomalous tells the story of a large underground complex located beneath network of electrical substations.
  • Some Are Born To Endless Night - A depressing tale about children stuck in a dimension of nothingness with no escape.

The SCP community has existed for many years is quite large. It was inevitable that games and movies would be made from the SCP universe. Here's a list of my favorite non-reading SCP things.

  • SCP: OVERLORD - A live action short film in which an MTF raids a house belonging to a cult.
  • SCP: Ghost Town - A machinima short film in which an MTF investigates an anomalous facility in a warring European country.
  • The Exploring Series - A channel that has videos which summarize and explain long articles and canons.

  1. I have never heard of this site, but it seems like a really cool site that I will have to look into. I really like how you able to give an idea of the scope and variety of content on this site. I also think that the warning was also nice to include. I also really like how you provided links to the stories so that I can just immediently check out some of their good content. Finally, I also really like how you gave links to some non reading things, since I think it is really cool how they have been able to expand their content into multiple fields. Anyways, thank you for the great blog post!

  2. The SCP wiki is always super fun to just get lost in. I tried to write an article once and proposed an idea in the forums, but it only ended up getting 1 out of the 2 required greenlights needed.

  3. This sounds like a really cool website to delve deep into and get interested in. It definitely doesn't seem like something you can understand after looking at it for a few minutes, but I feel like I understood a lot about it from this blog post. Nice post!

Why are villains ugly?

By Rose Benjamin In books and movies, antagonists/villains are often portrayed as hideous beast-like people. Of course, there are exceptions, but writers usually tend to make their villain's appearance match their behavior. This may be to add to the reader/viewer's perception of the antagonist as a villain, having less empathy towards them. Many antagonists are already generally bad people, however, so it shouldn't be necessary to have them look weird. I think it is more likely that villains' appearance is designed to scare a reader or viewer, creating a more immersive experience. Different stories have different reasons and backstories for their villain's appearance. One book published in 2004, The Legend of Holly Claus by Brittney Ryan, tells a story about Santa Claus having a daughter, which then awakens an evil warlock deep below the Earth. This warlock has been sealed inside a prison for a very long time, so it makes sense that he would be ugly. However, the n...

Abaddon's Gate - James S.A. Corey Contains spoilers for The Expanse books 1 and 2 By - Karl Vu Abaddon's Gate  is book 3 in James S.A. Corey's The Expanse  series. The Expanse is a sci-fi space opera takes place in the future where humanity has colonized almost every single planet and some asteroids and dwarf planets in the solar system. To explain Abaddon's Gate , I need to give a short summary of what happened in books 1 and 2. In book 1, Leviathan Wakes , our main character Jim Holden and his crew help a rogue detective throw the once populated asteroid Eros, now infected with an alien molecule, into Venus. In book 2, Caliban's War , Holden and his crew, a Martian soldier, and scientist find a group of people on the moon Ganymede using the alien molecule to infect children and change them into super soldiers. Holden and the martian soldier break a bunch of the kids out and nuke Ganymede into oblivion. In Abaddon's Gate , we find out that the alien molecule t...
